As a young child, I did not play with dolls much. The readily available ones were
always babies or little kids. Cute as those dolls are, they never did fire my imagination
as fashion dolls do.
I was fortunate enough to receive a very basic Barbie Doll when I was about ten years
old. As none of the doll clothes were available in Bulgaria, I had no choice but to make
them myself.
My mother wanted to help but her schedule was way too hectic to accommodate a whole
fashion doll wardrobe. When the school year ended, she let me use her old mechanical
Singer sewing machine. I ended up asking questions in the evenings about the construction
of a particular garment.

During the following day I would work my way though it and mostly learn from my mistakes. I will never forget the excitement of finishing a full outfit regardless of how many tries it took to get it completed. I started scavenging for interesting fabric from my aunt's sewing room floor to old clothing. Most of that summer vacation, I spent digging through my fabric scraps and working on doll clothes and I loved every minute of it. As it often happens, I did eventually decide that I was too old to play with dolls and put it all away. Only within the last year and a half, having graduated from college and earning a living for a few years, did I allow myself to even look dolls again. I was instantly hooked as I went from a collector to a customizing artist. I enjoy creating one-of-a-kind dolls with fully repainted faces, restyled and sometimes rerooted hair, and full costumes with accessories to match. My love of the fantastic and mythical led me to create whimsical creatures. I strive to make all my dolls appear realistic whether they are fairies, centaurs or simply glamour girls. |
